While the training mini-games aren't incredibly exciting, they do offer genuine benefits to a player's understanding of the game, while the temporary stat boosts associated with gameplans can be the difference between a win and a loss, giving players lots to think about.While this may sound fairly conventional, there's something about booking a fight, scouting an opponent and using the subsequent action points that's really compulsive, and makes the career mode a genuinely addictive experience. Like many sports-based career modes, UFC Undisputed 3's single-player offering lacks a little charm and charisma, but still manages to entertain.Players start in the World Fighting Alliance with low stats and a lack of sponsorship and must work their way up to the UFC by booking fights and spending action points on training regimes or gameplans.
With the exception of the final match - which features the weigh-in and a photo op - you go from one menu screen to the next, before finally beginning a fight. Three defeats and your out, win the title and you unlock Title Defence mode. The arcade-style mode sees players choose a fighter, climb the ladder and challenge for the title.
Fulfilling all of these challenges unlocks even more content, so there is a definite incentive to revisit.UFC Undisputed 3 is a thoroughly enjoyable fighting game, striking a wonderful balance between shallow action and simulation. Each match in Ultimate Fights Mode also contains a wealth of challenges, such as scoring ten punches within a time limit. What this does is create a genuine pre-match buzz, something that's sorely lacking from regular ring introductions in other game modes. Feuds such as Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson and Wanderlei Silva are introduced with a background video explaining their history, spliced with genuine fight footage.
While it may not add a great deal extra for long-term fans of the series, UFC Undisputed 3 is the finest entry to date, delivering a knockout blow to its rivals. The career mode is oddly addictive, despite its conventionality, while Ultimate Fights Mode offers countless interesting scenarios with the promise of unlockables.
